The integration of forest products manufacturing operations ensures optimum economic utilization of available timber resources.  It is generally wasteful and less productive to use prime saw logs for pulp manufacture when poorer quality pulp logs and wood residuals can be effectively utilized as pulping raw materials.

Likewise, value is added to pulp logs if it is possible to extract lumber from the logs before they are chipped.  Effective development of a multi-product manufacturing facility requires that log harvesting, delivery, sorting, and breakdown be integrated with the subsequent conversion operations.
